Wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis)

The Sorbus torminalis, commonly known as wild service tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Europe. It can grow to 15-25 meters in height. It prefers deep, nutrient-rich soils and loves sunlight, though it can tolerate some shade. Its water needs are moderate. It produces reddish-brown fruits in autumn, which are edible but somewhat tart when raw.

Air-dry weight of wood: 770 kg/m3. Its wood is hard and durable, so it is used to make furniture and art objects. Unlike Sorbus aucuparia, its wood does not fluoresce.
